I had the opportunity to take a tour of the SS United States. I’ve been hoping for some time now to be able to get on board & explore the ship. It’s like the ultimate abandoned house, but it’s not abandoned. She’s been moored in Pier 82 in Philadelphia, PA since 1996, trying to find a buyer who will repurpose the ship in some way. She’s an historic ship & the last of her kind, but her time is running out. She was evicted from her pier a few months ago & she must be moved or have a signed formal agreement to show to the court by September 12, 2024. The future is looking bleak & the conservancy are currently looking at options to use her as an artificial reef off the cost of Florida. Hopefully she can be saved & not end up as an underwater museum for fish & recreational divers. Time will tell.
